Thanks for the excellent, thoughtful piece, MC. It’s sad that many Americans can not sacrifice some of their perceived personal “freedom” to contribute to the common good and help save some lives.
Substack ate my much longer comment but yes! It’s magical thinking. We all want Covid to go away. But it’s not going away. It’s that invisible sniper in the hills. And if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time chances are you’re gonna get the bullet. For most, it’s a flesh wound. For folks like me and a dear friend of mine, the wound can go deep. But because it’s a numbers game and the foe is invisible, folks go on their merry way. It’s not going to happen to them—until it does.
I truly, and heart fully agree with each word you wrote MC...thinking and caring about others and being willing to do my part to aid my community + country by staying home, wearing a mask, social distancing, hand sanitizing and just being mindful is my part in saving lives (for my family, my friends and all those I’ve never met) is a task I’m willing to put ahead of my wishful”fun” plans. I do again, commend you for not staying silent and just smiling, all the while thinking other thoughts...FRIDAY, March 13th 2020 began my Stay at Home heed and I do not regret a moment.
I know so many of us have done the best we can under trying circumstances and so many have done what they felt was right and reasonable. But challenging times call for challenging even what we think is our "best" or what we think might be "right." We're all in this together, truly ... thanks for reading and commenting!

So sorry you and your friend had to go through that, Su. But super super grateful you're both better now!
